In a push to reduce the injuries from a problem that appears to be getting worse, DHR Health announced a new partnership to offer ATV training courses.

The courses are being brought through a partnership with DHR Health and the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office and local police departments.

“The goal of this program is to significantly reduce ATV-related incidents in our area,” DHR Health CEO Dr. Manish Singh said.

Doctors with DHR Health say ATV injuries have nearly tripled since 2018.

The percentage of pediatric patients injured on ATV’s is three times higher than that of pediatric patients in car crashes, doctors added.

"We've observed patients arriving with mangled extremities necessitating an amputation,” DHR Health Trauma Medicine Director Dr. Jeffery Scubic said. “We've taken care of patients that have arrived with severe traumatic brain injuries leading to brain death."

The new course will teach riders about the proper ATV to use based on age.

“And if we can prevent any other families from having to deal with these horrific catastrophic injuries, this will all be worth it,” Scubic said.
