WESLACO - No matter the outcomes in the first two games of the season, Valley 5A teams must now move on to the start of district play. Realignment has forced local squads into eight district games this year. That means the bell rings in week two in the drive for a championship trophy and playoff spots. Week one was hard on teams in our Dave's Dozen polls. On the 5A side, top-ranked San Benito edged Harlingen 7-3. McAllen Memorial was upset by Economedes 24-21. Weslaco East fell at Calallen 21-7. Donna doubled up Weslaco 28-14. Sharyland was idle. Edinburg North shutout Rivera 21-0. It was a tougher week for sub-5A teams. Following Edcouch-Elsa and Rio Hondo's losses on Thursday, Grulla lost at La Feria 35-28 and Hidalgo was nosed out 20-16 at Mercedes. 5th ranked Roma conquered a Laredo school for the second week in a row.
