EDINBURG - They say the youth is the future. So why not start teaching them young about the things that are passionate for?

Two former NFL athletes had that same mind-set when they decided to put together a youth camp.

"I just want to improve the state of valley football," said Jamaar Taylor. "I think anytime you can get two ex pros together and get the community together behind us, you can make huge strides in where valley football goes from here on out."

Jamaar Taylor and Quincy Carter are no strangers to the camp life style.

"It's kind of been well over due, two guys that made it to the nfl can bring some knowledge to these kids outside of what they are learning at their high schools," said Quincy Carter. "We're not trying to re-invent the wheel, we are just trying to add on to what the junior high schools and the high schools are teaching."

And wanted to bring that atmosphere to the valley.

"Good, good feed back to the community initially when we put it out the online registration," said Taylor. "We got plenty of hits on it, we got plenty of interest. The valley is a hot bed for football. Obviously we've got some work to do, but that's what we are here for, to help the valley over that hump and to do better in the game of football."

"We're looking to do something more in the future," said Carter. "Right now, here I think it is good for everybody. Our main objective for this one was particularly to get the kids going before the 7-on-7 season starts for the junior high and the high school kids, and I thought we accomplished those goals."

As the saying goes, practice makes perfect.

"Sometimes these coaches in the junior highs and the high schools, they can't spend the proper time with them," said Carter. "So if they can come outside of their environment and get a little extra help. i don't see how that hurts anybody."

And a youth camp is the perfect way to practice.
