The Hidalgo County Appraisal and Tax Assessor’s Office is holding an information session on Thursday to help answer questions that many taxpayers have after receiving their appraisal value

"We do this to outreach to the public to inform them of what is going on,” Hidalgo County Appraisal District Assistant Chief Appraiser Jorge Gonzalez said. “We just sent out our notices, so some of the questions are going to involve, ‘what do we do know? How does the process work?’"

On average, home values went up by at least seven percent.

Since appraisals went out, Gonzalez’s phone hasn't stopped ringing with calls from homeowners with questions about their home's value.

The 250,000 home appraisal values mailed out last month are not final, and property owners in Hidalgo County have until Monday, May 20, to appeal or protest the value.

“When they submit the protest, it would be good for them to submit any kind of evidence like if they are any issues with your house like a cracked foundation,” Gonzalez said.

Anyone with questions is encouraged to stop by the appraisal office, located at 2804 S. business Hwy 281 in Edinburg, or attend the informational session on Thursday, May 9 at Edinburg city Hall — located at 415 W University Dr. — at 5:30 p.m.
