WASHINGTON (AP) - Vacation jaunts and hobnobbing with global elites at a Swiss ski resort are out for President Donald Trump. Visits with troops and farmers are OK.

Like some of his recent predecessors, Trump is being careful about where he goes during the partial government shutdown.

He visited U.S. troops in Iraq, went to the U.S.-Mexico border to highlight his push for a wall and is addressing farmers Monday at a convention in New Orleans.

But Trump canceled on spending the holidays at his Florida home along with a trip next week to a global economic forum in Switzerland.

Political scientist Brandon Doherty says it wasn't surprising that Trump decided against going to Florida and Switzerland. Doherty says White Houses often are concerned about the negative images certain trips can produce.
