BROWNSVILLE – The reason as to why the former Brownsville fire chief was arrested and charged with two felony crimes was released.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS obtained a copy of the indictment handed down Wednesday for Carlos Elizondo.

He’s charged with theft of property by a public servant and misappropriation of fiduciary funds.

The indictment states that from May 2010 to March 2016, Elizondo took money from the Brownsville firefighter’s political action committee without the consent of the association.

Jorge Lerma, the association's current president, told CHANNEL 5 NEWS there was at least $8,000 unaccounted for while Elizondo oversaw the account.

We reached out to Elizondo for comment on the indictment. He told us he’s currently reviewing the indictment with his attorney.
