MCALLEN – A Rio Grande Valley congressman is working to secure federal reimbursement for migrant care that fell on local tax payers this year.

The reimbursements would apply to cities, counties, and non-government agencies along the border.

McAllen resident, Enrique Temkin, says the migrant surge is too much for border communities to bear.

"Why should my money go to that we pay a lot of taxes around here, sometimes I think that they take care of illegals more than they do our own citizens," he says.

Congressman Vicente Gonzalez says he and other members of congress have written two letters to the House Appropriations Committee to ask for reimbursement in the next budget.

Gonzalez hopes to find out next week when a decision on reimbursement will be made.
