LA FERIA – The city of La Feria is expanding their litigation in hopes of finding $3 million unaccounted for in funds.

City commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday night to expand their lawsuit against former city manager Sunny Philip. It will now include non-profit entities he is affiliated with.

La Feria city attorney Ricardo Navarro said the new administration discovered the discrepancies under Philip’s management.

Commissioners and Navarro were told by a citizen that Philip is tied to a number of non-profit groups.

Navarro said a further investigation showed some groups had city hall as their official place of address. He said it led them to believe the non-profits were operating as part of the city.

The La Feria Industrial Development Corporation is one organization that will be looked at closely, according to the city attorney.

“Any non-profit that has had a transaction with the IDC, and if we review the transaction and it doesn’t satisfy the economic objective of what the IDC is for, we will probably approach the non-profit about that,” he said.

He said the new findings are just skimming the surface.

Navarro said there will be more information once attorneys are granted access to find natural transactions Philips has connections to.
