WESLACO – Local banks are offering low-rate loans to aid federal employees affected by the partial government shutdown.

The Rio Grande Valley Credit Union vice president, Rosa Hill, says bankers and credit union staff are stepping in to offer assistance.

"Some of them don't even have money for gas. I heard a lot them saying they are car-pooling now because they are out of money. Some of them have savings, some of them don't," says Hill.

Lone Star National Bank is offering loans for federal employees as well.

The bank’s senior vice president and marketing director, Edna de Saro, says her employees want to help their federal government clients in need.

Neither financial organization expected the shutdown to last this long.

There are several other banks and credit unions prepared to work with federal employees.

These banks are listed below:

Navy Army

Security First

USAA

RGV Credit Union

Lone Star National Bank
