MERCEDES - A Rio Grande Valley school district is putting safety on priority following recent shootings.

Mercedes ISD is adding devices to their doors to help in a lock down or lock out situation.

A new school year and a new security plan; for retired Mercedes teacher, Felimon Gomez, the classroom setting is nothing like it once was.

Gomez remembers when security wasn't such a concern, unlike now.

Carolyn Mendiola, the Superintendent for Mercedes schools says they have added safety locks to all of their classroom doors.

She says the only training on how to work these devices will be for school administrators such as teachers.

Mendiola says although nothing is perfect and one hundred percent safe, they will continue to do their best to make sure teachers are prepared on how to use them.
