NEAR ALTON – Multiple agencies are working to extinguish a large grassfire near Alton.

Fire crews responded to the blaze that spread along La Homa Road north of Highway 107 around 1:30 p.m.. A section of La Homa Road is closed for precaution.

Alton Fire Chief Javier Garcia said a man was welding when several sparks ignited the fire, which then spread to an abandoned structure and large piles of trash and old tires.

No injuries were reported.

An ambulance is treating firefighters for dehydration.

The Hidalgo County Fire Marshal’s Office will be investigating if there were any violations.
