EDINBURG - The accrediting body for universities in Southern states explained in a report why UTRGV was placed on probation.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission said UTRGV failed to comply with a number of principles of accreditation. It also detailed what could be ahead for the university.

Some of those failures appear to be related to the acceptance of academic credit as well as, but not limited to, financial aid audits.

However, the report doesn’t go into detail about what may have gone wrong. That information will be released by the commission in January.

The commission’s board said they will meet next December to decide the school’s fate. They said their options could be to end UTRGV’s probation, extend the probation for another year or revoke the university’s accreditation.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS reached out to UTRGV about the information. They university said it plans to work with the agency to develop a plan that will resolve all the issues. They also sent the following statement:

“The information released today by SACSCOC is the next step in the process. In January, the accrediting will provide a detailed summary of its concerns, and at that time, we will work with the agency to develop a plan that will resolve all the issues. It is important to note that, during this process, UTRGV remains fully accredited and the day-to-day activities of our students, faculty and staff should not be affected.”
