Secretary of State's Office Explains Voter Registrar Process

WESLACO – It’s been a day since Edinburg Mayor Richard Molina was charged with organized election fraud.

The charges are related to his 2017 mayoral run – Molina helped people register to vote during his campaign as a volunteer deputy voter registrar.

The Volunteer Deputy Registrar program has been in place in Texas since 1985, allowing anyone to be appointed as a VDR in their county.

KRGV’s Taylor Winkel spoke with the communications director with the Secretary of State’s Office, Sam Taylor.

He says changing the rules so that candidates couldn’t participate would likely bring a legal battle.
