RIO GRANDE CITY – The suspect charged in the 2009 murder of a Rio Grande City man will face a new trial.

Gerardo Echavarria was convicted for the murder of Juan Raul Requenez and sentenced to 50 years in prison.  

Echavarria was granted the new trial on Thursday due to juror misconduct.

The Starr County Sheriff’s office says one of the jurors withheld that his father was murdered two years prior to the trial.
