PHARR – President Donald Trump announced on social media that 1 million people in the U.S. illegally are facing deportation.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS spoke with Rio Grande Valley residents about the president’s promise.

Rene Olivarez, from Edinburg, tells us he believes human laws must be respected and thinks the president is doing the right thing.

"It's not that we're against them coming, the matter is for them to come in a way that is respectful. I mean nobody likes for somebody to jump their fence,” says Olivarez.

On the other hand, Abraham Diaz works in education programs for La Union del Pueblo Entero, or LUPE, in San Juan, a social organization that works with immigrants.

Diaz says he thinks Trump is promoting hate against the immigrants.

"I think right now the system is broken and people are not taking advantage of it, but trying to navigate the broken system," he says.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS reached out to the White House for more on the president’s tweet.

A member of the communications staff at the White House, Judd P. Deere, says in a statement,

"Enforcing these final judicial orders is a top priority for Immigration and Customs Enforcement - willful defiance of our laws, and the defrauding of the American People with fraudulent asylum claims, will not be tolerated."
