WESLACO – Since the Veterans Services Center in Weslaco closed, many mid-Valley veterans have struggled to find nearby help.

A solution for the problem is now in sight with the plan to open a center in Mercedes.

A local Army veteran tells CHANNEL 5 NEWS that many veterans are disabled and cannot get around as easy.

Veterans Services Officer Felix Rodriguez says the office should have never closed in the first place.

“It's a disservice for veterans on that end on the east end of Hidalgo County to have to travel all of this way,” says Rodriguez.

The City of Mercedes and County Commissioner have agreed to open a center in Mercedes. It will be located where the municipal court used to be.

KRGV’s Cecilia Gutierrez has the details.
