MISSION-More than a million tombstones of veterans around the nation were decorated with Christmas wreaths.

It's all apart of the annual Wreaths Across America campaign. The event honors the fallen men and women who served our country.

Volunteers around the country are laying wreaths at about 1200 memorials and cemeteries including the Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission. More than 1400 wreaths were placed on tombstones there.

Gabriel Salinas' father-in-law was the second person buried there. The father-in-law served four tours in Vietnam. Salinas said it's a special event that his loved ones appreciate and look forward to every year.

"It's a really great thing that we can all come together as a nation...as a community and pretty much have the holiday spirit and support our fallen heroes," he said.

The event is planned as early as February.
