$10M in Federal Funding Awarded to University to Study Zika

WESLACO – More funding is being made available to help the fight against the Zika virus in Texas.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced about $10 million in federal funding for the University of Texas medical branch to study emerging and exotic pathogens such as Zika.

The medical branch is one of four universities to receive the funding.

The other centers receiving funding are the University of Florida, the University of Wisconsin and Cornell University.

Officials said they will release details in the coming weeks of how the funding will be used.
