Brownsville Woman to Give Birth to Baby with Microcephaly

CORPUS CHRISTI – A Brownsville woman diagnosed with the Zika virus is expected to give birth to a baby with microcephaly.

The baby will be cared for at Corpus Christi’s Driscoll Children’s Hospital.

Driscoll doctors said they’ve dealt with microcephaly in infants for years. According to the CDC, 10 percent of all Zika pregnancies result in a baby being born with birth defects.

“When a baby is born with a small head, then there are usually severe neurological complications and developmental issues,” Dr. Jaime Fergie said. “Depending on what is found, the baby will need to be seen by a neurologist, by a developmental specialist, need to see an audiologist.”

Doctors said they are hoping for a vaccine to be developed soon.

They hope their expertise at Driscoll Children’s Hospital will give the baby the best chance at survival and quality of life.
