Cameron Co. Prepares for Spike in Mosquito Population following Flooding

SANTA ROSA – Cameron County is gearing up for an increase in mosquitos as many parts of the county remain underwater.
Milagros Caballero, a Santa Rosa resident, says she’s already seeing a rise in mosquitos in her neighborhood.
"Yesterday, we were already being attacked by mosquitoes, so we got at least 20 cans of 'Off' just to, I mean, not get bit and go through this muddy water," says Caballero.
Ruben Aguilar Badillo who lives just a few homes down from Caballero says he agrees.
"After this we get so many mosquitoes, it gets ugly with the amount of mosquitoes we see," says Badillo.
CHANNEL 5 NEWS reached out to Cameron County Assistant Director of Environmental Health Edgar Chapa.
Chapa says they've already started getting calls from concerned citizens.
He says they are already loading spray machines onto county trucks and identifying the most mosquito-prone areas.
Chapa adds, since the county started collecting mosquito samples for lab testing two months ago, none have turned up positive for Zika, dengue or chikungunya.
