FEMA Visits Residentes Following Low Turnout at Centers

WESLACO - A low turnout at FEMA centers is pushing representatives on the ground to go knocking on doors.
They're urging people affected by the June floods to register.
Linda Martinez is among a group of FEMA representatives visiting the remains of a horrific storm.
“We knock on doors, we fill out the applications on our iPads. People that have not gotten registered. We fill them out here. From there we let them know that an inspector will be out here from 6-7 days.”
Martinez says this is the best way to reach out to those in need.
The low turnout at the disaster centers makes them wonder if people haven't registered.
San Juana Salinas has already gotten help and says she is slowly recuperating.
She applied for FEMA with her husband’s Social Security information since she isn't a U.S. citizen.
A situation Martinez says might scare people from applying.
“They are afraid they are going to say that well Idont have a social security, then I can't get into the system. But no, if you have a U.S. citizen living in your house and they have a Social Security, we register them. Put them in the system. When the inspector goes out it's the same routine”, explains Martinez.
Martinez says if no one is home, the FEMA representatives can leave flyers.
One of them being for a disaster meeting happening this weekend at the Monte Alto Community Center, on Saturday, Aug. 3 from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
