Immigrant Remains Costly to Brooks Co. Sheriff's Office

FALFURRIAS – A local sheriff is asking the federal government for a reimbursement for funds spent on immigrant remains recovered.

Since 2009, sheriff’s deputies in Brooks County have been using their own funds to recover over 600 immigrant remains.

President Trumps says he didn’t know about the immigrant deaths in Brooks County.  

Brooks County Sheriff Benny Martinez says he wasn’t invited to the conference held in San Antonio, where these comments were made.

Martinez decided to send the president’s staff a letter.

He says his department only has five deputies who cover 944 square miles of land – only one is on a shift at a time.

He says if they’re reimbursed, this money could go to the county and local business owners.
