Local Farmers' Harvest Affected by Cold Temperatures

WESLACO – Local farmers say the recent cold weather is causing issues for their harvest.

The senior vice president of business affairs, Bret Erickson, says the cold weather slows the harvesting process for growers throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

"Some of our products like melons, which are in the ground now, they're very young so that slows down the growing process for melons," says Erickson.

He says they are even behind on the planting stage for a lot of vegetables due to the weather conditions this winter.

Erickson says deadlines aren’t his only concern; pests and disease issues are also on his mind.

For now he says all they can do is roll with the punches.
