Missionary Group Robbed On Way to the Valley

HARLINGEN – A small group of students from Virginia says a thief almost put their entire plan to visit the Rio Grande Valley at risk.
The senior class from United Christian Academy in Greene County arrived in Harlingen this past weekend.
During a stop in San Antonio they noticed eight out of 12 carry-on bags were missing.
"A lot of chaos at first at the beginning," says student Anna Samuels.
She explains a thief rifled through their van when it was parked at a lot near the Alamo.
"The kids were very shaken," says chaperone Faith Vargas.
She says the bags contained personal items, like glasses and retainers. They also contained items essential to the missionary trip, like bibles.
The group says this experience won't stop them from completing their mission this coming weekend.
The students were busy practicing a skit in Harlingen to perform for youth Thursday afternoon.
Vargas explains the Valley Baptist mission they work with operates feeding stations and works with at-risk students.
"We lost all that but we've been able to press on," said Vargas.
They say despite this experience, their mission goes on.
