SAN BENITO – Police say counterfeit money is increasing in San Benito.

Authorities say criminals don’t need to print the money themselves anymore; they can buy it online.

It is not a crime to sell fake money because it is considered a novelty item.

San Benito detective Bernice Gomez says she has some tips on how to spot counterfeit money.

"It's minor details at times and like I said, some are very obvious just the texture itself on the printing on the real bills. You’ll be able to tell it's a little bit lifted they use more ink when it comes to the actual faces of the presidents," says Gomez.

Charges can range from misdemeanor to felony for purchasing something with counterfeit money.
