Revenue Lost in Cameron Co. during Intl Bridge Closure in Brownsville

BROWNSVILLE – Asylum seekers weren’t the only ones affected in the international bridge closure in Brownsville.
Every hour the bridge was closed cost the city more than $1,000.
In the downtown area Thursday, traffic was slower and stores appeared deserted.
Storeowners and managers told CHANNEL 5 NEWS more than 80% of their sales rely on bridge traffic.
Everyday those customers grow even more valuable in the Rio Grande Valley as sale signs on the windows lose their effectiveness to the internet.
The executive director of the bridge system in Cameron County estimated they lost about 5,000 in pedestrian crossings, 3,000 in vehicle crossings and $16,000 in southbound revenue alone.
