Second Fire Investigation Involving Lightning Underway

NEAR MERCEDES – A storm this Thursday brought in a lot of lightning and may have caused a fire at a home in near Mercedes.

Back-to-back house fires in Hidalgo county.

Investigators say both look to have been sparked by lightning.

Fire burned through the attic of a house.

A woman inside the house managed to escape.

She told investigators she felt her home shake, smelled smoke and called 911.

Hidalgo county Fire Marshal investigator John Franz, tells us there are things you should do when a storm rolls in.

“There's things you can do to protect your home. Bring electronics inside during a lightning storm, unplug any electronics you have so if there's a power surge that can help protect those devices but as far as preventing your house from being struck by lightning, it's just going to be a natural occurrence and unfortunate circumstance,” explains Franz.

Thursday’s fire followed another one that took place on Wednesday near Weslaco.

No injuries were reported in either fire.
