Social Media Information Now Required for US Visa Application

WESLACO – Social media information is now a requirement for those applying for a U.S. visa.
The Department of State says this is in an effort to seek more information on visa applications.
It began with President Donald Trump’s 2017 executive order to increase screening and vetting of those non-citizen or resident applicants.
If an applicant “liked” a post, checked in at their favorite restaurant or posted a picture with friends, this will all be part of a U.S. visa application.
A native to Spain, Alejandro Lopez is in the United States on a three year visa; he’s been teaching math at a local school.
Lopez believes the policy in place is unjust.
He adds this could raise privacy concerns, but he does understand why the government is doing it.
A local immigration attorney says even if an applicant has the perfect application, if they deny access to their social media account that can be enough to reject a visa.
