WESLACO – The state of Texas is out $450,000 after a botched voter roll purge.
The Secretary of State’s Office settled a federal lawsuit with civil rights groups after the state announced it identified nearly 100,000 registered voters who were non-citizens.
The data used by the state was incorrect and failed to exclude many naturalized citizens who are eligible to vote.
A federal judge called the state’s effort a “solution looking for a problem”.
