Transmission Poles near Valley Coast to be Replaced to Withstand Strong Winds

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND – The next hurricane season is six months away, but two coastal Rio Grande Valley cities are getting ready now.

About three months ago, more than half of South Padre Island was in the dark. Dozens of transmission poles were knocked down along Padre Boulevard due to winds reaching up to 80 miles per hour.

AEP Texas is now working to make sure the island is more prepared for severe weather. New steel poles will be installed and can withstand 140 mile per hour winds.

The $51 million project as already kicked off in Laguna Vista.
