UTRGV Women's Basketball Falls At Texas

AUSTIN – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s basketball team fell in its first road game of the season 85-69 to (RV) Texas on Wednesday at the Frank Erwin Center.

 

Trelynn Tyler, who made her season debut, led the way for UTRGV (2-2) with a game-high 29 points with five rebounds and six assists. Tyler made four of the Vaqueros’ season-high 12 three-pointers. Graduate student Jordan Agustus added 11 points.

 

Texas (2-2) had five players in double-figures with Joyner Holmes leading the way with 19 points and 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Celeste Taylor, Lashann Higgs, and Charlie Collier each finished with 11 points while Joanne Allen-Taylor added 10 points.

 

Tyler got the scoring started in the game with her first points of the season and then after a couple of Texas free throws, redshirt junior Amara Graham knocked down a three-pointer to give UTRGV the 5-2 lead with 7:24 to play in the first quarter. Texas answered with an 8-0 run that was capped by a three-pointer by Taylor with 5:34 left in the quarter but Tyler closed out the quarter with a buzzer beating three-pointer to get UTRGV within 19-15.

 

In the second quarter, UTRGV got three-pointers from freshman Halie Jones and Tyler to grab the 21-19 lead with 8:47 to play in the half. Texas once again rallied with a 12-0 run before another three-pointer by Tyler got UTRGV within 31-24. Tyler closed out the half with 11 points to lead all scorers as Texas took the 39-25 lead into halftime.

 

Texas opened up its lead in the second half to 42-26 as Holmes knocked down a three-pointer but UTRGV answered with back-to-back three-pointers from Johnson and redshirt junior Zhane Templeton to get back within 42-32 with 6:14 left in the third quarter.

 

Later in the quarter, Texas got their lead up to 20 points after a three-pointer by Allen-Taylor but Graham quickly answered with a three-pointer of her own to make it 63-46 with 44 seconds left in the third.

 

Texas got their biggest lead of the game in the fourth as a layup from Taylor made it 71-49 but back-to-back buckets by Jones and Tyler got UTRGV within 71-54 with 6:37 left to play. Tyler helped UTRGV get as close as 13 points after converting on a three-point play with 2:25 but Texas kept them at bay to close out the game. 

 

UTRGV will be back in action Saturday when faces off against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 1 p.m. at the Dugan Wellness Center, as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union.
