Wind farm projects in Cameron County leaving low concrete supply for local builders

SAN BENITO – It’s been good for job creation and business, but a spike in larger eco-friendly project around the Rio Grande Valley is putting the smaller guys on hold.

Commercial concrete is typically laid out by the yard, but as wind farm projects in Cameron County inch towards the finish, it’s taking a little longer to get to the full nine yards.

The county purchasing department reported, after multiple extensions, the concrete bid continued to go unanswered. New and previous contractors had said they were too busy with the amount of work at wind farms in the area.

Precinct 3 Commissioner David A. Garza says the bid was approved and the first two concrete deliveries happened Monday.

The approval may have resolved an issue for the county, but for local homebuilders, the projects are using up a lot of concrete, leaving them with low supply in the area.
