Hidalgo County health officials have confirmed more than 18,000 positive COVID cases between Dec. 23 and Jan. 10.

Officials say the large amount of positive cases is part of a backlog of pending cases that the state needed to confirm.

Authorities say with the rapid spread of the omicron COVID-19 variant, the number of positive tests is putting a strain on the state and county databases— slowing down reporting.

"That is a lot of testing— that's a lot of data," Hidalgo County Health Department Chief Administrative Officer Eddie Olivarez said. "We are backlogged with the data to be entered into the system."

Officials say the Hidalgo County Health Department team is working to input numbers during nights and weekends when the state's database is less bogged down.
