PEÑITAS – A local city is bringing attention to their lack of computer accessibility and the internet.

The Peñitas Public Library is one of the few places in the city students can go to if they want to go online.

Some residents say it should not be like this.

No service and no computer – a common issue for those who live in Peñitas, limiting residents.

“I use it a lot when looking up stuff for my child. This is my first child. I am always looking up stuff for the internet. Is this okay? Should I give her this or that?” said Anjali Santiago, a resident.

For Santiago to get internet, she has to travel to the library or visit a local nonprofit center, Buckner International.

“One of the only areas that we have to go and get internet service, as far as like a library setting, is at Buckners. They have a computer lab and we can use the internet there,” Santiago said.

On Monday, Charter Spectrum representatives announced they are upgrading their internet services in Peñitas. More than 30 families were also given free laptops.

State Representative Oscar Longoria says internet companies fear to invest in cities because cities like Peñitas don’t see money flow in quickly, which is why the city lacks in internet infrastructure.

“In a city like Peñitas, it’s a small city, so financially they might not be able to see a quick turnaround. But the fact that they are still willing to make the investment and looking for the long term effect versus the short term. It's very important,” explained Longoria.

Ana Flores from Buckner International says for Peñitas residents having computers and internet becomes a risk not many take.

“It comes down to, are we going to pay our water to feed our children or to clothe our children? Those things are a dire need. You’re going to go for that first before they go for that luxury,” said Flores.

For now, Santiago hopes her city gets the attention that is needed – better service and have it be more affordable.

The mayor of Peñitas urges internet providers to invest in cities, so people can improve their connectivity.
