PORT ISABEL – Traffic stopped on both sides of the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway for more than two hours Wednesday. Automatic gates on the bridge came down due to possible power or weather issues. 

Chief Robert Lopez with Port Isabel police said protocols by Texas Department of Transportation caused headaches for his city. 

"Our city hall was bombarded with calls, our dispatcher was bombarded with calls, our public works department was bombarded by calls," Lopez said. 

Lopez said TxDOT teams from Pharr needed to drive more than 70 miles to assess the issues in Port Isabel, adding to the delay. Lopez said TxDOT crews told his department there was nothing they could do to help with bridge operations.

TxDOT said specialized crews from Pharr responded Wednesday in addition to maintenance crews from Brownsville and support from the U.S. Coast Guard was also called in to check the bridge from below.
