MCALLEN – It took an act of the Texas legislature starting the new year to change case law that allowed cities to withhold information from the public.

The price tag of the 2015 Enrique Iglesias performance in McAllen was released Tuesday. It cost taxpayers $485,000, which covered a charter flight, 24 hotel rooms and concert equipment.

The debate over whether a city or jurisdiction has authority to withhold the details of contracts with third party contractors dragged on for more than four years.

In a 2017 interview, City Attorney Kevin Pagan told CHANNEL 5 NEWS the Iglesias team required McAllen to sign a confidentiality provision. A Texas Supreme Court decision, Boeing v. Paxton, ruled those provisions were more important than the public’s right to know, until now.
