EDINBURG – A Rio Grande Valley woman has taken the oath to become the first female Chief Justice of the 13th Court of Appeals.

Dori Contreras took the oath, which was administered by retiring Chief Justice Roy Valdez.

"There are 14 Courts of Appeals and there are only 80 justices statewide. So, I am one of 80 people that do this job, and now one of 14 chiefs," explains Contreras.

Contreras is a Valley native – a PSJA graduate. She is hopeful to make her community proud.
