Thousands of Volunteers Contribute to Rescue Effort

HOUSTON – The mayor of Houston has set a curfew for the area, from midnight to 5 a.m. Reports of looting in the flood stricken city prompted his decision.
Near I-10, on a street called Barker-Cypress, just over a levee in an area that is flood prone, rescue after rescue took place.
“I’ve been there 25 years. I’ve never had anything like this. Never had a flood like that before,” said evacuee Rosemary Horton.
Boat after boat, the elderly, babies, and pets were all being rescued from the flooded homes by volunteers who came to Houston to help.
CHANNEL 5 NEWS spoke with a man waiting for his daughter to make it out of the high water.
“I’m waiting for my daughter. She’s 18-19-years-old. She’s never been through anything like this before,” he said.
Meanwhile, at Houston’s energy corridor, there was another scene of rescue after rescue.
“We’d see the boat come and it would go pick up some other people. So we’d get our hopes up and we’d have to wait for another half hour. Finally, we made it,” said Kyle Seguin.
For some, it wasn’t their first go-around.
“First, I had to evacuate Galveston, then League City, and now here. Three times. My mom has been worried about me. I’m fine,” said Felipe DeBruhl.
Thousands upon thousands of people are safe because of the thousands of volunteers that went out to lend a helping hand.
