UTRGV loses 84-55 to Southern Utah, drop to 2-8 in WAC

RIO GRANDE VALLEY  The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s basketball team became fell to the Southern Utah University Thunderbirds 84-55 on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.

 

Junior Halie Jones led the Vaqueros (8-13, 2-8 WAC) with a season-high tying 16 points while going a season-high tying 4-for-5 from behind the arc with four rebounds and two steals. Freshman Charlotte O’Keefe scored a career-high 14 points while hitting a career-high two 3-pointers. Sophomore Iyana Dorsey scored eight points. Junior Zariah Sango scored six points with three rebounds.

 

Megan Jensen led the Thunderbirds (13-7, 9-0 WAC) with 21 points, four rebounds and two blocks. Tomekia Whitman scored 15 points with six rebounds. Samantha Johnston scored 14 points while going 4-for-6 from behind the arc. Lizzy Williamson scored 12 points with five rebounds, four assists, two steals, and three blocks. Cherita Daugherty finished with 10 points, three assists and two steals.

 

The Vaqueros had the early lead, going up 2-0 on a Dorsey layup and 4-2 and 6-4 on Sango layups. The Thunderbirds scored the next seven points as part of a 17-7 run to take a 21-13 late in the first quarter.

 

O’Keefe scored 10 points over the first five minutes of the second quarter while hitting a pair of 3-pointers to help the Vaqueros outscore the Thunderbirds 17-10 and pull within 33-32. The Thunderbirds responded by scoring the final eight points of the half to take a 41-32 lead.

 

The Thunderbirds picked up right where they left off at the end of halftime, opening the third quarter, on a 21-2 run, extending their run to 29-2 dating back to the second quarter, to go up 62-34 and push the game out of reach.

 

UTRGV visits defending WAC Champion Stephen F. Austin (SFA) on Thursday at 1 p.m. UTRGV was the only WAC team to beat SFA last year and the only team to beat them in Nacogdoches. Fans can watch domestically on ESPN+ or internationally via WAC International.
