KRGV AI Policy

This policy helps guide KRGV as we determine how to use AI tools in our processes.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS will only use AI as a support tool, not a replacement for journalists. 

Being the Valley's News Channel means CHANNEL 5 NEWS is committed to covering breaking news, weather and investigating issues to keep viewers informed. 

All news and sports stories will continue to be gathered, written, vetted, edited and put together by our reporters, anchors and producers.

All steps remain in the hands of journalists. AI tools will help our teams work more efficiently so CHANNEL 5 NEWS journalists can continue to report on local stories in the Rio Grande Valley that matter to our communities. 

No script or article will be generated by AI tools. CHANNEL 5 NEWS will not use AI to generate images for stories. 

If an AI-generated image is used, it will be clearly stated in the story. 

CHANNEL 5 NEWS will disclose if they use open circuit AI tools such as ChatGPT, or Gemini in the reporting process. 

Journalists know to avoid putting anonymous, private and confidential information into open circuit AI tools.

Developed in early 2026 the KRGV AI Policy will be regularly reviewed to establish trust and transparency for our viewers. 

KRGV may use AI tools in non-journalistic content.

KRGV marketing, operations, engineering, traffic, sales and other non-journalist teams may use AI tools for their task. 

All KRGV employees are encouraged to experiment with AI, however before utilizing the tool as a part of their workflow they are required to disclose their usage with their manager.
