Gridiron Heroes: Pirates Helping Pirates
HIDALGO – Hurricane Harvey took its toll on Texas. In Rockport, the damage was significant. Images tell the story of an area that still needs help. The recovery there is on-going and people in Hidalgo wanted to help.
“We got together and one of our local community members donated his trailer, “said Hidalgo ISD superintendent Xavier Salinas. “We got all the principals and community members together. It was an amazing experience. Just having kids come in and seeing their smiling faces all excited about helping other people.”
The school district put together a relief drive before their football game against Rockport-Fulton last week. The campaign was called “Pirates Helping Pirates”. Friday when the Hidalgo football team traveled north, a trailer full of supplies went with them for the Pirates of Rockport-Fulton.
“You find out what kind of people are when something bad happens,” said Hidalgo football coach Monty Stumbaugh. “There’s a lot of good people in this world. Lots of good people in Hidalgo. They came up with this. We all chipped in to take something to help people in need and that’s what it was all about.”
The football game Friday was played at Gregory-Portland’s stadium because Rockport-Fulton can’t use their home stadium at the moment. For Coach Monty Stumbaugh’s team, “Pirates Helping Pirates” was also a teaching tool.
“It’s not just football,” said Stumbaugh. “ It’s just part of life. It’s just helping people out and it’s a sense of pride in the community. It just shows what kind of person you’re going to be.”
Thanks to many generous donors in the Valley, people in Rockport have a trailer full of much-needed supplies. The Hidalgo school district did their part to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey.
“We’ve done a lot of great things in the past,” said Hidalgo ISD executive director of support services Albert Guerra. “But this was really special. It’s a great feeling to help others in their time of need.”
