The Economedes Jaguars kicked off their football season with Midnight Madness for the fourth straight year, opening practice to fans and the community.
The event gave the team a chance to build early momentum after the best season in school history.
"It's my last 'first practice'. Being a senior it's a little bittersweet but I'm excited to be out here with my guys. It's a great feeling to come out here and get the community out here to rally behind us in our first practice and just get support going into the season," senior quarterback John Carreon said.
Head Football Coach Raul Salas said the event keeps growing each year. "We get a lot of work in plus we get the community involved. Every year I'm trying to make it bigger and bigger," Salas said.
The Jaguars started last year 9-0 before losing the district title game to Weslaco and then falling to Los Fresnos in the bi-district round.
Now the Jaguars have their sights set on going further this season.
"Last year's team did really well, there was a lot of players there that played big for us," Salas said. "I think we've got a lot of kids that saw that and I think we'll be in a similar place and situation hopefully if not better this year."
Senior middle linebacker Jaime Eguia said the team is chasing something the program has never done.
"This year we're going to try to accomplish something Econ has never done before. We're going to try to make history. We're gonna show the program that this will probably be the best team Economedes has seen. We're all for it. We're putting in the work as much as we can. We're trying to be the best of the best. We want to be on top," Eguia said.
The Jaguars open the non-district schedule against McAllen High, followed by Palmview and Mission before a week 4 bye. PSJA North and Edcouch-Elsa close out the non-district slate.
District play opens against Edinburg, with a rematch against Weslaco in Week 8. Edinburg Vela joins the district in Week 9, followed by Edinburg North in week 10. La Joya closes out the regular season in Week 11.
