The Juarez-Lincoln Huskies are heading into a new season with more experience and a familiar face under center.
Last year, the Huskies went 0-10 after losing both starting quarterbacks to injuries before the season even got going. The team moved safety Leo Elizondo to quarterback to fill the gap.
Elizondo will start again this year and the Huskies are bringing back 9 starters on offense and 6 on defense.
"Last year was rough but the work we've been putting on in the off season, the progress that we've made throughout practice I'm feeling very confident with the commitment and the players we have to have a great season this year," senior quarterback Leo Elizondo said.
Head Coach Daniel Cortez said the team has grown from the experience.
"I think the experience the kids got, I think we can tell the maturity, the experience the confidence this year," Cortez said. "The kids are, the expectations the standards, they already know these are the expectations as far as this is what we need to do to improve and I think this year we'll be able to prove to our community that we're going in the right direction."
The Huskies open the season on the road against Valley View and Donna North before hosting Porter and Brownsville Lopez to close out non-district play.
District play begins in Week 5 against Pioneer, followed by Cigarroa. The Huskies host PSJA Southwest in Week 7, then face Sharyland in Week 8 and Roma in Week 9.
The regular season wraps up in Week 10 against Mission Veterans.
