Mission Veterans is back in 2026 with one of the best quarterbacks in the Rio Grande Valley leading the way.

Junior quarterback Roman Reyna is coming off a breakout sophomore season where he racked up more than 3,700 total yards, ranking 10 in the state of Texas. All eyes are on him heading into this fall.

"I've improved so much," Mission Veterans quarterback Roman Reyna said. "Coming into high school I had no clue how to read a defense and having coach Landry Gilpin there with me he taught me most of the stuff."

The Patriots graduated a few key offensive players and are looking to fill those spots. Head Coach David Gilpin says the team will still be strong because of Reyna.

"It was not a surprise. We knew he was a talented athlete but the fact that he was that good last year was a little bit of an eye opener for us," Gilpin said. "Going into this year we know what we got. I tell the kids, we're going to be good no matter what because of Roman. Roman is that good. We're going to be a good football team no matter what. We want to be great we want to become championship team we want to put gold balls in the trophy case it's going to take all of us so that is the message."

Mission Veterans will also look to defend their district title this fall. But first, they face a tough non-district schedule.

"We tried to build our schedule as tough as anybody around every realignment and it worked out really well, we were able to pick up some good ball games for sure," Mission Veterans Head Coach David Gilpin said. "Playing a non-district schedule like that just feeds right into what the philosophy and the belief of our program is."

The Patriots open with the Battle of Conway against Mission, followed by PSJA North in Week 2, Weslaco in Week 3 and Los Fresnos to close out perhaps the toughest non-district schedule in the RGV.

District play begins against new opponent Cigarroa, then Sharyland in Week 7 and Roma in Week 8. After a bye in Week 9, the Patriots face Juarez-Lincoln in Week 10 before closing the season against Pioneer in Week 11.
