Law enforcement was able to rescue 39 undocumented migrants from a tractor-trailer that caught fire following a vehicle chase Thursday night.

US Border Patrol Rio Grande Valley Sector Chief Patrol Agent Jared Ashby posted on X that despite deflated tires, the suspect kept driving until the tractor caught fire. Agents and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers were able to open the trailer and rescue the migrants.

Hidalgo County Sheriff Eddie Guerra said the southbound lane of U.S. 281 six miles north of Linn was closed due to the incident.

All lanes have since reopened.

Ashby said the migrants were medically checked for injuries prior to being taken into custody.

The incident is under a joint investigation by Homeland Security Investigations and U.S. Border Patrol; U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Professional Responsibility is also reviewing the incident.
