Hidalgo County, TX (KRGV) — The Advocacy Alliance Center of Texas says its new Line Check website lets voters see wait times at early voting sites in Hidalgo and Cameron counties.

Long lines at some polling sites left voters waiting to cast ballots. One man, James Athey, waited 25 minutes at Lark Community Center in McAllen.

County voting records show Lark Community Center was the busiest site during the first four days of early voting.

The group says voters report the wait times themselves, and it does not independently verify individual submissions, and the reports may not reflect current conditions.

The site uses reports from the last 45 minutes and gives more weight to newer ones.

During early voting, voters can cast ballots at any site in the county where they are registered. AACT NOW says Line Check covers Hidalgo and Cameron counties only, and these are not Election Day locations.

"We know that people's lives are busy, and they usually use this time to go vote during lunch or between after-school pickups or after work. Even sometimes before work, so we decided to act," AACT NOW Executive Director Norma Flores-Ruiz said. "It lets your community members and neighbors know the specific wait time at a specific location, and it only works if you are submitting the information, so we need the community to come out."

AACT NOW plans to expand the tracker to Starr and Willacy counties by Monday, Oct. 26.

The group says no name, email or phone number is required to use the site. It also says the tool is for informational purposes only and does not report on behalf of the Hidalgo County Elections Department or the Cameron County Elections Department.
