An Alton-area family is dealing with costly repairs after a storm ripped the roof off their mobile home.

Pieces of a metal roof now cover Marisela Muñoz's property after the storm hit Sunday night. Muñoz and her adult son were inside when it happened.

"I heard a loud explosion. I thought it was thunder, and it wasn't thunder; it ended up being my roof that ended up on my neighbor's tree," Muñoz said.

The roof piece landed in a neighboring tree and was removed by the fire department on Monday evening. Muñoz said the trailer shook hard during the storm.

"I was scared, and I was paranoid. It felt like a mini tornado when the winds were 60 or 70, so we felt it really bad in the trailer," Muñoz said.

Without a roof, rain poured into the home. Muñoz knows she needs to repair it before the next storm.

"I do have a few leaks that if it rains, it's going to leak again," Muñoz said.

Muñoz plans to hire a contractor to repair the damage. The Better Business Bureau is urging storm victims to slow down before signing any contracts.

"They are kind of like our weather people; they keep track of where the storms are and what kind of damage these individuals have, and what they do is go door to door," Better Business Bureau  of South Texas President Hilda Martinez said.

Martinez said homeowners should research any company before agreeing to repairs. She also recommends never paying the full price up front and avoiding signing a contract on a tablet.

"Ask the contractor to provide you with the paperwork so that you can check to verify that all the information that is on the contract is correct. Find out who will be the finance company as well," Martinez said.

The BBB recommends checking over the contract to make sure the company's information is accurate before signing anything.

The BBB says people can file a complaint by phone or online if they think they have fallen victim to a contractor.
