Brownsville, TX (KRGV) — A new interactive map is helping Brownsville property owners find out if their buildings could qualify for historic tax credits.

The Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation launched the map that shows 306 historic properties, and 278 of them could potentially qualify for both state and federal historic tax credits.

Finding a property on the map does not mean it automatically qualifies. Owners still have to apply, and any renovation has to meet historic preservation rules.

BCIC says owners should go through the process before starting any work. Making changes too soon could affect eligibility for the credits.

"If you've already done work, stop, plan, and contact. Stop in the sense that you need to stop the work before you keep going because it could put the credit that you're trying to get in jeopardy," BCIC Marketing Intelligence Specialist Rudy Hinojosa said.

The next step for owners is to make a list of what has already been done and what is still planned. Agencies will need that information as they review the project.

There is no set deadline, but BCIC says owners should start the application process as early as possible. The map also includes a guide showing owners who to contact at the city, state, and federal level.
