Cameron County opens kayak launch at Olmito Nature Park
Cameron County has opened a new kayak launch at Olmito Nature Park.
The launch is part of phase two of the park construction, which also includes bird-watching areas and fishing piers.
Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño says the county is not aware of another kayak launch like this one within Cameron County.
For now, visitors will need to bring their own kayaks. The county is looking at possibly offering rentals in the future.
"We're very, very proud of this and we want to show that we can do everything at once,” Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño said. “We can grow. We can bring in industry. We can bring in jobs. But at the same time, we need to preserve our environment and preserve the culture and the beautiful beauty that our nature has here in Cameron County."
County leaders say about $10 million has been spent on the project. Another $4 million to $6 million is expected to complete phases three and four.
