Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz introduced legislation to honor Lance Corporal Dustin Sekula, according to a Friday news release.

The Lance Corporal Dustin Sekula Congressional Gold Medal Act posthumously awards the Congressional Gold Medal to the Edinburg native, and honors Sekula's courageous service and ultimate sacrifice, the release stated.

Sekula served during Operation Iraqi Freedom and died at the age of 18 on April 1, 2004, after sustaining injuries from enemy fire in Iraq.

According to the congresswoman’s office, Sekula turned down an agriculture college scholarship to join the military at the age of 17 due to a desire to serve and protect the United States. The Dustin Sekula Memorial Library is named after him.

“Lance Corporal Dustin Sekula made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms, and this bill ensures that his bravery and service are honored at the highest level,” De La Cruz said in a statement. “His story is one of unwavering dedication to his family, his community, and his country. May we always remember his sacrifice and those who have given their life in service to our nation.”

Upon passage of the legislation, the medal would be presented to Sekula's family.
